Personal Note
I opened an independent financial services firm over 20 years ago for many reasons. First and foremost; technology had finally reached a point where backoffice requirements (statements, tax reporting, account accesibility, etc..) could accurately and efficiently be met.
We are all more than just a resume and as you decide on the direction you want to take, I thought I'd provide a quick story that might help hint at which way my moral compass points. My father had many sayings and stories but in the end, he was mostly a strong believer in "teaching moments." This teaching moment began one afternoon, following one too many self congratulatory moments on my part. Sent to my room until dinner, with no explanation other than, "go to your room and think about why you are there," I simply stewed in the knowledge that my father was truly crazy. Later that night, around the dinner table, dad said, "I heard a great joke today," and then proceeded with a story: The setting was a boy surrounded by his team mates returning home from little league practice. Overly confident and beyond eager to brag on himself, he monopolized the conversation with tales of his grand efforts that day on the field. The father driving the car, hoping to prevent the boy from unwittingly alienating himself further from his friends said, "Billy, sounds like you had a great practice, which position do you think you play best?" To that Billy perked up and eagerly responded, "Why Mr. Jones, I play all 9 positions equally well." That may not have soaked in immediately but its been 45 years since it's telling and I can promise you one thing, I'll never forget it or it's point.
In the end, I know I can only help people who want help, but I think it's even more important that anyone considering working with me understands that if the job is past my abilities to service properly, I will always be the first to admit it.
